Lactation Consultants in Richmond, VA

Specialized Support for Your Feeding Journey

Are you dreading the next feeding because of anticipating pain? Do you find yourself anxious about whether your baby is transferring enough milk, or feeling overwhelmed by a cycle of triple-feeding that leaves you exhausted? Feeding a newborn is often described as the most natural thing in the world, yet for many parents, it can feel anything but simple.

When feeding challenges arise, they can impact every aspect of your early parenting experience. The physical pain of a shallow latch, the emotional toll of your baby struggling to gain weight, or the frustration of your baby falling asleep at the breast can leave you feeling isolated and discouraged. It’s frustrating when these challenges impact your confidence and your ability to bond with your new child. Many parents are told to “just wait it out,” but when you are dealing with lip blisters, reflux, or mastitis, waiting feels impossible—and often makes the underlying issues harder to resolve.

You don’t have to navigate this journey alone. The Center For Speech & Swallowing offers specialized support through our certified lactation consultants in Richmond, VA. Unlike general support groups, our approach is clinical, personalized, and deeply rooted in evidence-based practice. Led by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) with backgrounds in speech pathology, nursing, and birth support, our team looks beyond the symptoms to identify the root cause of feeding difficulties.

By addressing oral function, positioning, and supply issues with a gentle, expert hand, our team empowers you to regain control of your feeding journey. Many parents report meaningful improvements—less pain, better transfer, and a calmer baby—even within the first visit.

Assisting Parents in Richmond and Welcoming Patients Nationwide for Lactation Consulting Services

Our lactation consultants establish care based on your individual situation. The Center For Speech & Swallowing understands that our role is to support your specific goals, whether that involves exclusive breastfeeding, pumping, combination feeding, or bottle feeding.

Prenatal Lactation Consultations

You don’t have to wait until the baby arrives to seek support. Our lactation consultants in Richmond, VA offer prenatal consultations that can be completed at any time during your pregnancy. These sessions are designed to prepare you for feeding your baby when the time comes, discussing your goals, past experiences, and how to identify a good latch immediately after birth.

Postpartum Feeding Support

This is the core of our service. During these consultations, an IBCLC will assess your baby’s oral function, feeding mechanics, latch, positioning, and milk supply. Our team troubleshoots immediate issues—such as nipple pain or poor transfer—and develops a sustainable plan for home.

Specialized Pumping & Bottle Feeding

If you’re pumping exclusively, returning to work, or supplementing, you need a strategy that protects your supply and your sanity. The Center For Speech & Swallowing offers compassionate guidance on flange fitting, pump schedules, and “paced bottle feeding” techniques to ensure your baby can transition between breast and bottle without confusion or flow preference.

Oral Tie & Function Assessment

Our specialized services are ideal for infants who are struggling with oral ties (tongue-tie or lip-tie). Because our team is rooted in speech and swallowing pathology, we don’t jump straight to release procedures. The Center For Speech & Swallowing works to improve your baby’s oral function to support feeding first. If oral ties are present, we’ll establish a timeline for therapeutic intervention that will allow us to determine whether a procedure is truly appropriate.

When to Seek a Lactation Consultant

Many parents delay seeking help because they believe their struggle is “normal.” While there is a learning curve to feeding, pain and distress are not normal. If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, we encourage you to schedule a visit immediately:

Maternal Symptoms:

  • Nipple pain, trauma, cracking, or bleeding
  • Concerns about low supply or unmanageable oversupply
  • Recurring plugged ducts, mastitis, or thrush
  • Difficulty transitioning off a shield
  • Being stuck in a cycle of nurse-pump-bottle that is unsustainable

Infant Symptoms:

  • Shallow latch, baby falls asleep quickly while feeding, or loses the latch easily
  • Clicking or smacking noises when eating, gumming/chewing the nipple, or “milk tongue”
  • Poor weight gain, excessive gas, reflux/spitting up, or baby gags easily
  • Extreme frustration with feeding or difficulty taking a breast or bottle
